India has entered the 34th day of the lockdown enforced in a bid to check the spread of coronavirus across the country. The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has climbed to 27,892, with Delhi reporting a worrying spike in cases in the last 24 hours. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to again address the nation by the end of this week.

Here are all the important developments related to coronavirus you need to know:          

India cases and toll: The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in India now stands at 27,892, with the toll mounting to 872, according to the data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The country has 20,835 active cases while 6,184 people have recovered from the illness. In the last 24 hours, 48 COVID-19 deaths have been reported across the country. 

Delhi sees a spike in new cases: The national capital recorded a surge in fresh cases of coronavirus—293 new cases were reported on Sunday. As a result, Delhi’s total COVID-19 count now stands at 2,918 with 877 discharged after treatment and 54 succumbing to the killer virus. Simultaneously, the number of containment zones in Delhi has now grown to 97.

Maharashtra remains ground zero for COVID-19: The financial capital of the country continues to report fresh coronavirus cases at a steady rate. Although the state reported 440 new cases on Sunday, nearly 50 per cent less than the record 811 new cases on Saturday, the total number of cases is now inching close to the 10,000 mark. On Monday morning, Maharashtra had 8,068 confirmed COVID-19 cases with 342 people losing their lives to the virus.

Many states cross 1,000-mark: Along with Maharashtra, Delhi and Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have also reported more than 2,000 coronavirus cases so far. The southern states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are showing a surge in numbers with 1,885, 1,097 and 1,002 cases respectively.    

Global corona update: Globally, close to 30 lakh COVID-19 cases have been reported so far, according to worldometer, a website that provides real-time data on coronavirus cases. While 8,78,955 people have recorded from COVID-19, the virus has claimed a staggering 2,06,997 people. The US alone has reported 9,87,322 COVID-19 cases and 55,415 deaths.

Corona vaccine trials: Days after the human trials of the vaccine developed by a team of researchers at the Oxford University kicked off in the UK, Serum Institute of India plans to start the production of the vaccine in the next two-three weeks, reported PTI. If the human trials are successful, the company plans to bring the vaccine to the market by September-October.

Umbrella for social distancing: A gram panchayat in Alappuzha district of Kerala has come up with a unique idea to practice social distancing. Thanneermukkom panchayat president has asked the residents to use umbrellas while stepping out to maintain enough distance between two people.
