When you choose a pair of football shoes, you must look at three important things—fit, material and traction.  Here are some tips to help you make an intelligent choice:

The right fit

Getting shoes that are a perfect fit for your feet is indeed very important. The shoe collar protects your ankles and gives you a snug fit. You can choose from high-cut, mid-cut and low-cut. While the high-cut collars go above your ankle, the mid-cut ones reach the ankle and the low-cuts go just below the ankle bone.

Material matters

Football shoes can be made of different materials—synthetic, knitted fabric, kangaroo leather and calfskin.

1. Shoes made of kangaroo leather score high on comfort but can be quite expensive. If you are a beginner and don’t want to shell out much on your first purchase, you can consider other cost-effective and durable options.

2. Shoes made of calfskin are durable and comfortable too, but your feet may take some time getting used to them.

3. Shoes made of knitted material are popular because they are comfortable and cost less compared to leather shoes. However, they may not be great in wet conditions.

4. Synthetic shoes are all-weather shoes and are lightweight too. You may not find them as long-lasting as your leather shoes.

For better traction

What differentiates football boots from other shoes are the studs for traction.

1. Firm-ground (FG) studs are ideal for playing on dry surfaces. These studs are usually made of plastic. ‍

2. If you love playing soccer on soft, wet and grassy surfaces, you can go for soft-ground (SG) studs, which will offer you a better grip and prevent you from slipping. These studs are made of metal.

3. There are shoes for surfaces like astro-turf too. These artificial-ground (AG) shoes don’t have studs.

There are some great looking shoes available online as well as in brick-and-mortar stores. But don’t go by looks alone, look for comfort, fit and durability too.
