According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the water-borne disease diarrhoea claims the lives of one out of every nine children worldwide. The CDC also reports that it is the second leading cause of death among children below five years of age.

Looking at these statistics you would suppose people and families worldwide would like to ensure a supply of safe and hygienic water for their children.Investing in a good water purifier from a tried-and-tested brand may go a long way in addressing your concerns. Not only do they filter out bacteria and viruses, which target your immune system, they also get rid of toxic impurities like heavy metals and chemicals.

There are many types of water filters in the market, but it is important to choose one that is most suited to treat the water that is supplied to you. For instance, some of them may have an abundance of chemicals like chlorine and nitrates, while in other houses the water may be overflowing with an abundance of heavy metals like iron and copper.

Here, the lowdown of the major types of purifiers you can choose from:

RO or reverse osmosis

In an RO filter, dissolved solids are removed by passing them through a permeable membrane. This membrane can eliminate salts, minerals, chloramines and heavy metals from the water.

If the water supply in your home has a hard quality, RO purifiers might just be the best option.

Ultraviolet (UV) and ultrafiltration (UF) technology

Kids are particularly vulnerable to pathogenic elements in water. UV rays help in getting rid of microorganisms, which might cause water-borne diseases. A UV filter, however, is less effective when it comes to removing dissolved solids. This concern can be addressed to a certain extent by a UV-UF combination filter, where the fibre membrane of the ultrafiltration (UF) unit can trap total dissolved solids. Still, it is advisable to use this combination filter in regions where the water has a low quantity of total dissolved solids.

Activated carbon filter

Carbon is a good absorber of dirt and other impurities. Water filters with active carbon can remove organic chemicals, pesticides and herbicides effectively and render fresh drinking water.

Keep in mind the fact that being porous, carbon doesn’t remove dissolved solids entirely. So, you may have to pair it up with another purification system like an RO unit or an UF unit to get the best results.
