India cases and toll: Even as the government is working on the modalities of a graded exit plan post 3 May, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases continues to climb. As of Wednesday evening, there are 22,982 active cases, 7,796 recoveries (plus one migrated), and 1,008 deaths, taking the total confirmed coronavirus cases to 31,787, according to data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).

Can’t deny treatment to non-COVID patients: The Department of Health and Family Welfare issued a fresh notification on Monday evening, asking the states to ensure that private hospitals provide critical services to non-COVID patients. The directive comes in the wake of several reports of hospitals turning away patients.

Delhi has no green zone: The national capital continues to report fresh COVID-19 cases at a steady rate and has not a single district under the green zone (where no cases have been reported). Of the 11 districts in Delhi, nine are red zones (hotspots) while the remaining are orange zones (where no fresh cases have been reported in last 14 days). Delhi has reported 3,314 confirmed coronavirus cases so far, with 1,078 recoveries and 54 deaths.

Maharashtra, Gujarat lead COVID-19 numbers: The western state of Maharashtra reported 722 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, reported The Indian Express. According to the latest figures on the MoHFW website, Maharashtra’s total COVID-19 cases stand at 9,318 while the number of fatalities has gone up to 400, the highest in the country. Neighbouring state Gujarat has also reported nearly 200 fresh cases in the last 24 hours. It has 3,744 confirmed cases—434 people have recovered while 181 succumbed to the illness.

Global corona update: The coronavirus pandemic continues to wreak havoc across the world, with the total cases climbing to 31,63,814. According to worldometer, a website that provides real-time data on COVID-19 numbers, 9.75 lakh people have recovered while over 2.19 lakh have died due to coronavirus globally. In the US, which has reported 10.37 lakh confirmed cases so far, 66 people have died at a veterans’ ageing home in Massachusetts and another 164 have tested positive for COVID-19, reported AP.

Story of hope: The over-a-month-long lockdown is making many people feel lonely and anxious. Karan Puri, in his ‘70s, was all by himself on his birthday on Tuesday. A team of the Panchkula police in Haryana decided to greet the senior citizen on his birthday and surprised him with a cake. In a video that has now gone viral, an overwhelmed Puri is seen cutting the cake while wearing a birthday cap.
