Corona Updates You Must Track: With Nearly 19,500 Cases In 24 Hours, India Closing In On 5.5 Lakh-Mark

India continues to register a high number of fresh coronavirus cases every day. With nearly 19,500 new cases on Sunday, the country’s COVID-19 tally stands at nearly 5.5 lakh. As the numbers swell, Maharashtra has decided to continue with the lockdown post 30 June while Telangana and Tamil Nadu are likely to take a decision soon. Manipur, which has 730 active cases of coronavirus, has announced that lockdown will continue until 15 July.

India cases and toll: Monday morning saw the country’s coronavirus count rising to 5,48,318 confirmed cases. India now has 3,21,722 recoveries against 2,10,120 active cases, according to the latest data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. In the last 24 hours, 19,459 fresh cases of coronavirus were reported across the country. During the same time, 380 people succumbed to the infection, taking the death toll to 16,475. India conducted 1,70,560 COVID-19 tests on Sunday.

How is Delhi faring: Delhi’s COVID-19 tally has surged to 83,077 cases with 27,847 active cases, 52,607 recoveries and 2,623 deaths so far. On Sunday, the national capital reported 2,889 fresh cases of the infection while 65 people lost the fight against COVID-19. The number of containment zones in Delhi has gone up from 280 to 417 after larger zones were divided into smaller pockets.

Lockdown to continue in Maharashtra: Maharashtra, the worst-hit state by the coronavirus, will continue with the lockdown post 30 June. Of the state’s 1,64,626 total caseload, 70,622 are active cases while 86,575 have recovered from the illness and 7,429 have succumbed to it. The state reported 5,493 fresh cases of coronavirus and 156 deaths on Sunday.

Tamil Nadu likely to decide on extending lockdown: While four districts in the state are under an intense lockdown, a decision on extending it to the entire state is expected Monday. On Sunday, the state recorded yet another biggest single-day spike with 3,940 fresh cases, taking the state’s tally to 82,275 confirmed cases. The state currently has 35,659 active cases against 45,537 recoveries. A total of 1,079 people have succumbed to the infection.

Karnataka shows surge in COVID-19 cases: In a first, the southern state recorded more than 1,000 fresh cases of coronavirus on Sunday. With 1,267 new cases, the state’s coronavirus tally stood at 13,190. According to a Hindustan Times report, Bengaluru (rural and urban) accounted for 910 new cases reported on Sunday. The state government has announced a tagging system under which any COVID-19 patient under quarantine will have to wear a tag for two weeks.

Global corona update: The global coronavirus tally has breached the 1 crore- or 10 million-mark. According to worldometer, a website that tracks COVID-19 cases across the world, the total confirmed case count stands at 1,02,43,858 with 55,53,495 recoveries and 5,04,410 deaths. In the US, which has reported 26,37,077 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 1,28,437 deaths so far, as many as 36 states are witnessing a rise in cases. On Saturday, the US reported 44,782 fresh coronavirus cases.

Brazil, which has emerged as the new global hotspot for COVID-19, has reported 13,45,254 confirmed cases and 57,658 deaths. According to a Reuters report, the Latin American country has inked a deal with British-Swedish drugmaker AstraZeneca to locally produce an experimental vaccine developed by the firm to fight the infection.
