India cases and toll: A day after reporting less than 50,000 infections, India recorded 54,044 cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, between 8 am Tuesday and 8 am Wednesday. According to the data shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 717 people succumbed to the disease across the country during the same period. India’s COVID-19 tally has reached 76,51,107, which includes 7,40,090 active cases, 67,95,103 recoveries and 1,15,914 fatalities. Meanwhile, 10,83,608 COVID-19 tests were carried out across the country on Tuesday.

Ahead of the festive season, West Bengal continues to report a steady surge in fresh infections. The state reported a record 4,029 cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours—the virus claimed 61 lives during the same period. Bengal’s COVID-19 tally has climbed to 3,29,057, which includes 6,180 deaths. The active caseload stands at 35,170 even as 2,87,707 people have recovered from the illness.

Delhi witnessing another surge in infections: The national capital is again witnessing a steady surge in daily cases since the last week, after a downward trend in the first week of October. In the last 24 hours, Delhi reported 3,579 new coronavirus cases, the highest in 25 days. Forty-one people also succumbed to the disease during that time. Delhi’s coronavirus tally has gone up to 3,36,750, which includes 6,081 fatalities.

PM Narendra Modi warns against complacency: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday evening in an address to the nation warned citizens against complacency ahead of the festive season to check the spread of coronavirus. The Prime Minister urged citizens to wear masks, maintain physical distance and wash hands frequently. He asked people to be patient and wait to get vaccinated before lowering their guard.

Global corona update: The global COVID-19 count has surged to 4,10,50,369, with 92,88,341 active cases, 3,06,32,287 recoveries and 11,29,741 fatalities, as per Worldometer. Currently, 73,618 COVID-19 patients are in serious or critical condition. The US, which is leading the global tally with more than 85.20 lakh cases, is now witnessing another surge in infections. The country reported 60,590 fresh coronavirus cases and 929 deaths on Tuesday.
