India cases and toll: In keeping with the trend of a steady decline in daily cases, India recorded 55,722 cases of coronavirus and 579 deaths in the last 24 hours, between 8 am Sunday and 8 am Monday. India’s COVID-19 tally has crossed the 75-lakh mark, the second country to reach the grim milestone after the US.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India’s coronavirus count stands at 75,50,273, which includes 7,72,055 active cases, 66,63,608 recoveries and 1,14,610 fatalities. India conducted 8,59,786 tests for COVID-19 on Sunday.

India can contain COVID-19 infections by February? Going by the predictions based on a mathematical model, India could contain the spread of COVID-19 by February, according to an expert committee report released on Sunday. The overall COVID-19 cases could reach 1.06 crore with minimum active cases in February, the report projected. However, without mandatory wearing of masks and adequate test-and-trace measures, the projections would not stand, the committee warned, as per The Times of India report.

Community transmission in certain districts, admits health minister: In a first, Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on Sunday admitted that certain districts in the country have witnessed community transmission. The minister, however, said that it is not happening across the country during a weekly interaction with his social media followers. A few weeks ago, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that community transmission of the infection was happening in the state. Earlier, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan too confirmed community transmission in certain parts of state capital Thiruvananthapuram.

The US is witnessing a fresh surge in infections, with the country reporting an average of 55,000 cases daily since the last few days. The country’s top infectious diseases’ expert Dr Anthony Fauci, however, said the situation would have to turn “really, really bad” to push for a national lockdown.
