India cases and toll: In a record surge in daily cases, India reported 95,735 cases of coronavirus on Wednesday. With this, India’s COVID-19 case count has climbed to 44,65,863, as per the data shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. A total of 1,172 people succumbed to the disease in the last 24 hours—the coronavirus toll now stands at 75,062.

The active caseload has crossed the 9-lakh mark. India currently has 9,19,018 active cases of coronavirus while 34,71,783 people have recovered from the illness. India carried out 11,29,756 tests for COVID-19 on Wednesday.

Delhi COVID-19 count breaches 2-lakh mark: As the number of infections continues to surge in Delhi, the national capital’s overall COVID-19 caseload breached the 2-lakh mark on Wednesday. With 4,039 fresh cases on Wednesday, Delhi recorded its highest spike in daily cases; the coronavirus tally rose to 2,01,174.

The national capital currently has 23,773 active cases while 1,72,763 people have recovered from the illness. Delhi’s COVID-19 toll has reached 4,638 with 20 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.   

Serum Institute gets notice from drug regulator: Pune-based Serum Institute of India has been issued a notice by the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) for not informing it about AstraZeneca halting the global trials of the experimental vaccine developed in association with the Oxford University and the suspected adverse effects reported in a patient. Serum Institute has partnered with the British-Swedish firm AstraZeneca to manufacture the COVID-19 vaccine, if successful, for low- and middle-income countries.

Maharashtra records biggest jump in daily cases: Maharashtra reported 23,577 cases of coronavirus and 380 deaths on Wednesday. This is the biggest jump in the daily cases of coronavirus in Maharashtra. The state’s COVID-19 tally rose to 9,67,349, including 27,787 deaths. Maharashtra’s active caseload is 2,53,100 while 6,86,462 people have recovered from the illness.

On Wednesday, Mumbai too reported its highest single-day surge in coronavirus cases—2,227 cases. Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday said that the pandemic-triggered crisis will not end anytime soon. “We were able to contain the number of cases between March and May, but it does not seem like the pandemic will be conquered in the near future. Even the World Health Organization has indicated that it won’t end soon,” The Indian Express report quoted him. 

Global corona update: Globally, 2,80,25,482 cases of coronavirus have been reported so far, as per Worldometer. This includes 70,13,944 active cases, 2,01,03,536 recoveries and 9,08,002 fatalities. Of the currently infected patients, 60,536 are in serious or critical condition.

The US remains the worst-hit country by the pandemic in terms of sheer numbers—it has recorded 65,49,475 COVID-19 cases, including 1,95,239 deaths. States like Iowa and South Dakota are emerging as the new hotspots for the infection, says a Reuters report. While Iowa has an infection rate of 15 per cent, for South Dakota, it is 19 per cent.
