India cases and toll: After recording more than 78,000 daily cases for two days in a row, there was a slight drop in the numbers on Monday. With 69,921 new cases of coronavirus, India’s tally climbed to 36,91,166, as per the data available on the website of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The COVID-19 toll rose to 65,288 with 819 deaths on Monday. India currently has 7,85,996 active cases while 28,39,882 people have recovered from the illness. A total of 10,16,920 tests for COVID-19 were conducted across the country on Monday.

Unlock 4.0 kicks off today: Under the fresh guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, states and UTs will not impose any local lockdown outside the containment zones without consulting the Centre. There are no restrictions on inter- and intra-state movement of people and goods and no separate permission or e-permit is required.

However, schools and colleges will continue to stay closed. Cinema halls, swimming pools and entertainment parks too will remain closed. Metro services will resume in a graded manner from 7 September.

How is Maharashtra faring: On a day when India recorded a slight dip in daily cases, Maharashtra too saw the number of daily cases decline marginally. After the high of 16,000-plus cases over the weekend, the western state reported 11,852 cases of coronavirus on Monday. With this, Maharashtra’s COVID-19 tally stands at 7,92,541, which includes 1,94,399 active cases and 5,73,559 recoveries. The death toll has reached 24,583 with 184 people succumbing to the disease on Monday.

Under Unlock 4.0, the Maharashtra government has allowed hotels and lodges to operate at 100 per cent capacity from 2 September. Private offices can operate with up to 30 per cent staff strength.

Central teams to visit four states: The Health Ministry on Monday said that the central government would deploy high-level medical teams in Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, which have reported a surge in COVID-19 cases, reported Mint. Each team will include an epidemiologist and a public health expert, and will guide and support the testing and containment measures taken by the state governments.   

Global corona update: The global coronavirus count rose to 2,56,37,634 with 68,40,874 active cases, 1,79,41,988 recoveries and 8,54,772 fatalities, as per Worldometer. Of the currently infected patients, 61,145 are in serious or critical condition.

Four South American countries are now among the 10 worst-hit nations by the coronavirus pandemic. This includes Brazil (39,10,901 cases with 1,21,515 deaths), Peru (6,52,037 cases with 28,944 deaths), Colombia (6,15,168 cases with 19,663 deaths) and Argentina (417,735 cases with 8,660 deaths). Chile is at No. 11 with 4,11,726 cases, including 11,289 deaths.

Meanwhile, the US continues to be the worst-affected country by the virus. Its coronavirus caseload is 62,11,796, which includes 1,87,736 deaths.
