Big states like Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu continue to report maximum number of fresh coronavirus cases across the country. Maharashtra’s COVID-19 tally is close to 1.75 lakh cases

As Ministry of Home Affairs’ guidelines for Unlock 2.0 come into effect, shopping malls in Haryana’s Gurugram and Faridabad cities will reopen on Wednesday. India’s COVID-19 count has climbed to more than 5.85 lakh cases with more than 18,600 cases reported on Tuesday. Track all the key updates related to coronavirus and unlock 2.0 guidelines here:

India cases and toll: With 2,20,114 active cases, 3,47,978 recoveries and 17,400 deaths, India’s coronavirus tally is at 5,85,493 cases, according to the latest data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). The country added 18,653 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday.

In the last 24 hours, 507 people died due to the virus or co-morbidities, a significant jump from 418 deaths reported the previous day. A total of 2,17,931 tests for COVID-19 were conducted on Tuesday. While Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit state by the virus, Tamil Nadu, after managing to bring down the number of fresh cases last week, is witnessing a spurt this week.

How is Delhi-NCR faring: The national capital’s coronavirus count stands at 87,360 cases—26,270 active cases, 58,348 recoveries and 2,742 deaths. On Tuesday, Delhi reported 2,199 new coronavirus cases and 62 deaths. Delhi now has 440 containment zones while of a total 13,661 beds for COVID-19 treatment in hospitals, 7,749 beds are vacant.

Meanwhile, shopping malls in Gurugram and Faridabad will finally reopen on Wednesday after being shut for more than three months. Among Haryana government’s list of guidelines are Aarogya Setu app on visitor’s phone, strict social distancing norms and wearing of masks.

Where Maharashtra stands: The western state continues to report the maximum number of fresh cases of coronavirus, on a daily basis, across the country. On Tuesday, Maharashtra added 4,878 new COVID-19 cases to its total tally, which has climbed to 1,74,761 cases. Maharashtra’s tally is more than France’s (1,64,801 total cases), one of the worst-hit countries in Europe during the first wave of infection. The state has reported 75,995 active cases, 90,911 recoveries and 7,855 deaths. Mumbai alone accounts for 77,658 confirmed coronavirus cases—893 new cases were reported on Tuesday.       

Tamil Nadu caseload going up: Tamil Nadu, which has extended the lockdown across the state till 31 July, is witnessing a rapid increase in coronavirus caseload. The state’s tally has gone up to 90,167 confirmed cases with 3,943 new cases reported on Tuesday. Sixty people succumbed to the infection the same day, taking the death toll to 1,201. The state currently has 38,892 active cases while 50,074 people have recovered from the illness.    

Global corona update: The global COVID-19 count has surged to 1,05,90,724 confirmed cases with 57,98,270 recoveries and 5,14,020 deaths on Wednesday morning, according to worldometer, a website that tracks the spread of infection across the globe.

The US reported its biggest single-day spike in cases on Tuesday with more than 47,000 fresh cases added to the tally. States like California, Texas and Arizona are emerging as the new hotspots for the infection in the US. The fresh spike in cases has prompted tech giant Google to defer its plan to reopen offices in the US from 6 July to 7 September. The US has reported 27,27,853 confirmed coronavirus cases so far with 1,30,122 deaths.
