Corona Updates You Must Track: Over 26,500 Fresh Cases In A Day, India COVID-19 Tally Close To 8 Lakh

With more than 26,500 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, India’s coronavirus tally is inching close to the 8-lakh mark. Maharashtra (6,875 new cases) and Tamil Nadu (4,231) remain the biggest contributors. Karnataka, with 2,228 fresh cases in a day, is witnessing a surge even as Delhi has managed to check its number (2,187 new cases) for close to a week now.

India cases and toll: India added a record 26,506 new cases of coronavirus on Thursday, taking the country’s tally to 7,93,802 cases. Of the COVID-19 cases recorded so far, 4,95,512 have recovered while 21,604 have succumbed to the infection—475 people lost their lives to the virus in the last 24 hours. India currently has 2,76,685 active cases of coronavirus, according to the data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). A total of 2,83,659 people were tested for COVID-19 on Thursday.

How is Tamil Nadu faring: After reporting under 4,000 daily cases for the last three days, Tamil Nadu again recorded an uptick, with the state adding 4,231 fresh cases of coronavirus to its tally on Thursday. With this, the state’s COVID-19 count stands at 1,26,581—there are 46,655 active cases while 78,161 people have recovered from the illness and 1,765 succumbed to it.

A central team is in the state to assess Tamil Nadu’s containment strategy. On Thursday, the team led by additional secretary in MohFW took stock of the situation in Chennai, which alone has recorded nearly 75,000 cases of coronavirus.

High infection rate in Delhi? The interim findings of a sero survey, conducted by the National Centre for Disease Control and the Delhi government, found that nearly 15 per cent of Delhi’s population (national positivity rate for the infection is 10 per cent) may have been infected by COVID-19, reported Hindustan Times. A total of 22,823 people were tested across 11 districts in the Capital between 27 June and 5 July for the survey.

Delhi recorded 2,187 fresh cases of coronavirus on Thursday while 45 people lost the battle against the disease. Delhi has, so far, recorded 1,07,051 confirmed cases; of these, 82,226 people have recovered from the illness while 3,258 could not.                

Global corona update: After facing global criticism for its response to the pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday announced the setting up of an independent panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response (IPPR) to evaluate the global response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The global COVID-19 tally has surged to 1,23,90,737 with 72,21,101 recoveries and 5,57,416 deaths, as per Worldometer, a website that tracks the numbers globally. While the US holds the number 1 position for total cases recorded— 32,19,999—the infection is spreading fast in several South American countries. Along with Brazil, which has recorded 17,59,103 cases, Peru and Chile too are climbing up the ladder, with 3,16,448 and 3,06,216   cases, respectively. In comparison, Spain, the worst-hit country by the pandemic in Europe after Russia, has recorded 3,00,136 confirmed cases of coronavirus.
