India cases and toll: India has been recording less than 80,000 daily cases since the last few days. Between 8 am Wednesday and 8 am Thursday, India reported 78,524 COVID-19 cases; this takes the country’s overall tally to 68,35,655 cases, as per the data shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Of the total cases, 9,02,425 are active while 58,27,704 people have recovered from the illness. So far, the virus has claimed 1,05,526 lives across the country, with 971 people succumbing to the disease in the last 24 hours. India conducted 11,94,321 tests for COVID-19 on Wednesday.

Kerala records over 10,000 cases in a day: In the biggest jump in daily cases in the southern state, Kerala recorded 10,606 new infections in the last 24 hours. After Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, Kerala is now the fourth state to post more than 10,000 fresh cases of coronavirus in a day.

The state’s active caseload is among the highest in the country, at 92,246. Kerala’s COVID-19 tally has climbed to 2,53,405, which includes 1,60,253 recoveries. The state has reported 906 coronavirus fatalities, with 22 deaths in the last 24 hours.

Karnataka posts record surge in daily cases: Another southern state recorded its maximum daily COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours. With 10,947 new infections in a day, Karnataka’s coronavirus tally has reached 6,68,652, of which 1,16,172 are active cases. France, one of the worst-hit countries by the pandemic in Europe, has so far reported 6,53,509 cases of coronavirus.

Karnataka’s capital Bengaluru recorded more than 5,000 daily cases for a second consecutive day. In the last 24 hours, 113 people in the state lost their lives due to the virus. Karnataka’s COVID-19 toll has climbed to 9,574 while recoveries stand at 5,42,906.  

India says no to large study to test Russia’s COVID-19 vaccine: The Indian drug regulator, Reuters reported, has declined a proposal from Dr Reddy’s Laboratories to carry out a large study to test the efficacy of Russia’s COVID-19 vaccine, Sputnik-V. It has instead asked Dr Reddy’s Lab to first conduct a smaller trial to evaluate the vaccine. Dr Reddy’s Lab has partnered with Russian Direct Investment Fund (RFID), which is marketing the vaccine, to conduct trials and distribute the vaccine in India.

Global corona update: The global tally for COVID-19 has not shown any signs of stabilizing ever since the pandemic broke out early this year. As per Worldometer, the global caseload is 3,64,01,583, which includes 79,22,478 active cases, 2,74,18,538 recoveries and 10,60,567 deaths. Among the active cases, 67,411 are serious or critical.
