India cases and toll: India’s coronavirus tally jumped from 10 lakh to 11 lakh cases in just four days. On Monday morning, India’s caseload surged to 11,18,043 with 3,90,459 active cases and 7,00,086 recoveries, according to the data shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The death toll has climbed to 27,497 with 681 people succumbing to the infection in the last 24 hours. India added a record 40,425 fresh cases of coronavirus in a day with Maharashtra alone reporting 9,518 cases. The country conducted 2,56,039 COVID-19 tests on Sunday.

Maharashtra records highest daily surge: The western state reported 9,518 fresh cases of coronavirus on Sunday, the single-biggest surge in daily cases so far. With this, the state’s COVID-19 count rose to 3,10,455 with 1,29,032 active cases and 1,69,569 recoveries. A total of 11,854 people in Maharashtra have lost their lives due to COVID-19. After Delhi, Mumbai is now the second city to have reported more than 1 lakh cases of coronavirus. With 1,038 new cases on Sunday, the city’s tally stands at 1,01,388. State minister Aslam Shaikh has tested positive for COVID-19.  

Karnataka has second-fastest doubling rate: Karnataka, which is emerging as a new COVID-19 hotspot in the country, has the second-fastest doubling rate for the infection (10 days) after Meghalaya (seven days), reported Bangalore Mirror. The average doubling rate for COVID-19 nationally is 20 days. The state recorded 4,120 fresh cases of coronavirus on Sunday, taking the toll to 63,772. Karnataka currently has 39,376 active cases while 23,065 people have recovered from the illness and 1,331 succumbed to it.

Andhra Pradesh shows worrying signs: Even as Karnataka’s COVID-19 count is surging, neighbouring state Andhra Pradesh recorded 5,041 fresh cases of coronavirus on Sunday, the state’s highest single-day surge. The state’s coronavirus tally is inching close to 50,000—of the total 49,650 cases recorded so far, 26,118 are active and 22,890 recoveries. With 56 deaths in the last 24 hours, Andhra Pradesh’s COVID-19 death toll has climbed to 642.

COVID-19 vaccine human trials to start: The first phase of human trials for experimental COVID-19 vaccine, called Covaxin, developed by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech will start at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Monday. As its first step, the hospital will start screening individuals for the human trials. The vaccine is being developed in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute of Virology (NIV). 

Global corona update: The global coronavirus tally is now at 1,46,46,905 cases with 87,37,852 recoveries and 6,08,987 deaths, as per Worldometer, a website that tracks COVID-19 cases across countries. The US has 38,98,550 total confirmed cases of coronavirus, including  1,43,289 deaths. This is followed by Brazil which has recorded 20,99,896 cases of COVID-19 with 79,533 deaths.
