India cases and toll: With 74,442 new infections in the last 24 hours, between 8 am Sunday and 8 am Monday, India’s coronavirus tally has crossed the 66-lakh mark. At 66,23,815 cases, India’s caseload is second only to the US, which has recorded 76,36,912 COVID-19 cases.

India currently has 9,34,427 active cases while recoveries stand at 55,86,703, as per the data shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on its website. The COVID-19 fatalities have reached 1,02,685 with 903 deaths reported in the last 24 hours. India carried out 9,89,860 tests for COVID-19 on Sunday.

20-25 crore people may get vaccinated against COVID-19 by July: Health Minister Harsh Vardhan in his Sunday interaction on social media said that the government is expecting to administer 40-50 crore doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to 20-25 crore people by July 2021. Frontline healthcare workers who are involved in tracing, testing and treating COVID-19 patients will be among those who will get the vaccine on priority.

Kerala’s tally continues to surge: With 8,553 new infections and 23 deaths in the last 24 hours, Kerala’s COVID-19 tally has reached 2,29,886 cases. Kerala currently has 84,579 active cases while 1,44,471 people have recovered from the illness and 836 succumbed to it. The Kerala government has already imposed a ban on a gathering of more than five people, which will continue till the end of this month.

Global corona update: The global coronavirus count has gone up to 3,53,99,250, with 77,33,916 active cases, 2,66,23,510 recoveries and 10,41,824 deaths, as per Worldometer. Of the currently infected patients, 66,509 are in serious or critical condition.

The US, which remains the worst-hit country by the pandemic, has reported a record surge in COVID-19 cases in at least nine states since last week, reported Al Jazeera. The spike comes on the back of a dip in temperature. The US, as per the report, is recording an average of 42,600 fresh cases and 700 deaths each day as against 35,000 cases and 800 deaths daily in mid-September.

Meanwhile, France reported 12,565 fresh cases of coronavirus on Sunday. As the daily cases continue to surge, the French capital, Paris, will see its famous bars staying shut for two weeks, starting Tuesday, to contain the spread.
