Corona Updates You Must Track: India Tally Breaches 6-Lakh Mark, Telangana Reports Worrying Surge In Cases

India breached the 6-lakh mark for coronavirus cases on Thursday. With more than 19,100 fresh cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, India’s tally has gone up to 6,04,641 cases. On the bright side, India’s recovery rate for the infection is now close to 60 per cent with nearly 3.6 lakh people getting cured of the disease. While Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Delhi continue to remain in the top three positions in terms of total caseload, Telangana is reporting a worrying surge in cases.

India cases and toll: On Thursday, India’s coronavirus tally climbed to 6,04,641 cases with 2,26,947 active cases, 3,59,859 recoveries and 17,834 deaths. India added 19,148 fresh cases of coronavirus and 434 deaths to its grim tally over the last 24 hours. The country added close to 4 lakh cases of COVID-19 in the month of June with Delhi, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu accounting for more than 60 per cent of the total caseload. India conducted 2,29,588 tests for COVID-19 on Wednesday.

Where does Delhi stand: The national capital’s COVID-19 tally stands at 89,802 cases. Delhi currently has 27,007 active cases with 59,992 recoveries and 2,803 deaths. In the last 24 hours, Delhi reported 2,442 new cases of coronavirus while 61 people succumbed to the illness. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said that the situation is improving in the capital but “there is no room for complacency”. “The virus is unpredictable. We must continue our efforts with more vigour,” the CM said.

Maharashtra tally climbs to over 1.8 lakh cases: With 1,80,298 confirmed cases of coronavirus so far, Maharashtra’s tally could soon overtake Germany’s which has reported 1,96,324 cases. The western state has 79,091 active cases while 93,154 people have recovered from the illness. The death toll stands at 8,053 with 198 people losing their lives to the virus on Wednesday.   Maharashtra added 5,537 fresh cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

Tracking Telangana, Tamil Nadu’s spike in cases: Telangana added 1,018 new infections to its coronavirus tally on Wednesday; Hyderabad is emerging as the epicentre for majority of the cases reported so far. With this, the state has reported 17,357 confirmed cases of coronavirus. It has 9,008 active cases with 8,082 recoveries and 267 deaths.

In Tamil Nadu, the confirmed case count has reached 94,049 cases. The state currently has 39,859 active cases while 52,926 people have recovered from the illness. More than 1,200 people have died in Tamil Nadu due to the virus. The state reported 3,882 fresh coronavirus cases on Wednesday, a slight drop compared to 3,943 reported the previous day.

Global corona update: The global COVID-19 tally is inching close to the 11 million-mark (or 1.1 crore cases). According to worldometer, a website that tracks coronavirus cases across the world, the global count stands at 1,08,09,992 cases with 60,32,381 recoveries and 5,19,050 deaths.        

Along with the US, which has reported 27,79,953 confirmed cases of coronavirus so far, Brazil, the second worst-hit country by the virus, too continues to report a daily surge in cases. The Latin American country has 14,53,369 total cases of coronavirus with 60,713 deaths. The country reported over 1,000 deaths in the last 24 hours.    

UN Security Council calls for global ceasefire: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Wednesday adopted resolution 2532 calling for a global ceasefire to fight the coronavirus pandemic. The resolution calls for a 90-day “durable and humanitarian pause” to armed conflicts immediately. The ceasefire, however, would not apply for ongoing military operations against ISIS, al-Qaida and other UNSC-designated terror groups.
