Maharashtra records more than 16,000 cases of coronavirus for a second consecutive day. Delhi reports more than 2,000 daily cases after over a month while Odisha’s tally crosses 1-lakh mark

India cases and toll: India recorded 78,512 cases of coronavirus and 971 deaths in the last 24 hours. With this, India’s COVID-19 tally climbed to 36,21,245 while the death toll mounted to 64,469, as per the data shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. India currently has 7,81,975 active cases while 27,74,801 people have recovered from the illness. A total of 8,46,278 tests for COVID-19 were conducted on Sunday.

In a month, India has added nearly 20 lakh cases of coronavirus to its tally—the total caseload was 16,38,870 on 31 July (till 8 am). During the same period, 28,722 COVID-19 fatalities were reported across the country. From 25-31 August (till 8 am), India reported nearly 4.54 lakh cases of coronavirus.

How is Maharashtra faring: Maharashtra recorded 16,000-plus cases of coronavirus for a second consecutive day. After 16,286 cases on Saturday, the state reported 16,408 fresh cases of coronavirus on Sunday. The state’s COVID-19 count has reached 7,80,689 with 1,93,889 active cases, 5,62,401 recoveries and 24,399 fatalities. In the last 24 hours, 296 people succumbed to the disease.

Five districts in the state, according to The Indian Express report, have recorded a 400 per cent jump in COVID-19 cases from 29 July to 29 August. These districts are Beed, Sangli, Kolhapur, Osmanabad and Nagpur. Beed, for instance, has reported a 603 per cent increase in cases and 521 per cent jump in deaths. In contrast, Mumbai, recorded 28.04 per cent rise in cases during the same period, for Thane, it was 43.8 per cent.

Delhi records 2,000-plus cases: Continuing with its upward trend in daily cases, Delhi recorded 2,024 cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours. The national capital recorded more than 2,000 cases after over a month-and-a-half. Twenty-two COVID-19 deaths were reported on Sunday, taking the capital’s toll to 4,426. Delhi’s coronavirus count has reached 1,73,390 with 14,793 active cases and 1,54,171 recoveries.

Odisha crosses 1-lakh mark: Odisha became the 11th state (including Delhi) to cross the 1-lakh mark in terms of total coronavirus cases. The state’s caseload stands at 1,00,934 with 27,219 active cases, 73,233 recoveries and 482 deaths. For a second day in a row, Odisha recorded more than 3,000 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours. While the state reported 3,252 fresh cases on Saturday, it added 3,014 cases to its tally on Sunday.  

Tracking COVID-19 vaccine progress: The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Dr Stephen Hahn in an interview to Financial Times said his agency could authorize a vaccine under ‘emergency authorization’ before the completion of phase-3 human trials. “This is going to be a science, medicine, data decision. This is not going to be a political decision,” he told the paper.

Russia this month approved a vaccine for COVID-19, Sputnik V, before the phase-3 human trials were completed.

Global corona update: The global coronavirus count has breached the 25-million or 2.5-crore mark. The global caseload has reached 2,53,90,790 with 68,30,432 active cases, 1,77,09,728 recoveries and 8,50,630 deaths, as per Worldometer. The US continues to lead the global tally with 61,73,328 cases and 1,87,225 deaths. Brazil, the second worst-hit country by the virus, has a total caseload of 38,62,311 with 1,20,896 deaths.
