India cases and toll: India added 86,508 cases of coronavirus in 24 hours, between 8 am Wednesday and 8 am Thursday. With this, the country’s coronavirus tally has climbed to 57,32,518, according to the data available on the website of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Of the total COVID-19 caseload, there are 9,66,382 active cases, 46,74,987 recoveries and 91,149 deaths. In the last 24 hours, 1,129 people succumbed to the disease across the country. Compared to Tuesday, there was a significant rise in the number of COVID-19 tests carried out on Wednesday. A total of 11,56,569 tests were conducted against 9,53,683 on Tuesday.

Tracking COVID-19 vaccine progress: Johnson and Johnson on Wednesday announced that it has kicked off the phase-3 clinical trials for its experimental COVID-19 vaccine candidate JNJ-78436735. The company would enrol 60,000 volunteers across three continents to test the safety and efficacy of its single-dose vaccine against COVID-19. According to The New York Times report, the vaccine “uses a technology that has a long safety record in vaccines for other diseases”.

How is the capital faring: The national capital recorded 3,714 fresh cases of coronavirus and 36 deaths in the last 24 hours, taking Delhi’s COVID-19 tally to 2,56,789. Delhi currently has 30,836 active cases of coronavirus while the toll has mounted to 5,087. A little over 2.2 lakh people have also recovered from the illness. Delhi’s deputy CM Manish Sisodia who tested positive for COVID-19 a few days ago was admitted to state-run Lok Nayak Hospital on Wednesday after his oxygen levels dropped.    

Global corona update: With 74,36,226 active cases, 2,36,85,839 recoveries and 9,82,045 fatalities, the global coronavirus tally has reached 3,21,04,110, as per Worldometer. Of the currently infected patients, 62,375 are in serious or critical condition.

In view of the rise in fresh COVID-19 cases in Brazil, Argentina and India, Saudi Arabia has suspended air travel to and from these countries. Anyone who has travelled to these three countries 14 days before arriving in Saudi Arabia has also been barred entry, except those on official government invitations. Saudi Arabia has, so far, recorded 3,31,359 cases of coronavirus, including 4,569 deaths.

Meanwhile, Finland is trying a new way to screen passengers for COVID-19 at the airport. It has deployed ‘coronavirus-sniffing’ dogs to screen arriving passengers at the Helsinki airport. Four dogs of different breeds trained by Finland's Smell Detection Association will be part of a four-month trial, reported AP.
