India cases and toll: India recorded 73,371 cases of coronavirus and 895 deaths in the last 24 hours, between 8 am Thursday and 8 am Friday, according to the data shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The daily COVID-19 fatalities saw a sharp spike compared to the 680 deaths reported the previous day—Maharashtra recorded 337 deaths in the last 24 hours.
India’s COVID-19 tally stands at 73,80,468 cases, which includes 8,04,528 active cases, 64,53,779 recoveries and 1,12,161 deaths. The active cases now account for 10.92 per cent of the total caseload, recoveries 87.56 per cent and fatalities 1.52 per cent. India conducted 10,28,622 tests for COVID-19 on Thursday.
Puja-bound Bengal headed for a spike in cases? West Bengal is witnessing a steady surge in daily COVID-19 cases and its tally has reached 3,09,417. In the last 24 hours, the state reported 3,720 fresh infections, its highest daily surge so far. Also, 62 people succumbed to the disease, taking the state’s COVID-19 toll to 5,870.
With an eye on a possible spike in cases during Durga Puja, the West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission (WBCERC) has now asked doctors to not leave Kolkata during the four-day festivity, reported PTI. West Bengal currently has 31,984 active cases while 2,71,563 people have recovered from the illness.
5-minute antigen test to detect COVID-19: Scientists at the University of Oxford have developed a rapid antigen test that can detect the coronavirus in under-5 minutes, reported Reuters. The test, the researchers said, can be used in mass testing of people at airports among other places.
Global corona update: The global COVID-19 tally has climbed at a relentless pace since the last several months. On Friday morning, the total caseload stood at 3,91,76,103, which is roughly 40 million, as per Worldometer. This includes 86,94,068 active cases, 2,93,79,089 recoveries and 11,02,946 deaths. Currently, 70,897 COVID-19 patients across the world are in serious or critical condition. The US tops the global list of worst-hit countries by the pandemic, with 82,16,315 total cases and 2,22,717 deaths.
