India cases and toll: India added 92,071 cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours (8 am Sunday to 8 am Monday), taking the nationwide tally to 48,46,427, as per the data shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The active caseload is inching close to the 10-lakh mark—there are currently 9,86,598 active cases. So far, 37,80,107 people have recovered from the illness. The COVID-19 toll stands at 79,722 with 1,136 people succumbing to the disease in the last 24 hours. India conducted 9,78,500 tests for COVID-19 on Sunday.   

Gyms, yoga centres allowed to reopen in Delhi: In a late night order on Sunday, the Delhi government allowed gyms and yoga centres to reopen from Monday. However, those situated in containment zones—Delhi has nearly 1,500 of them—will remain shut.

Meanwhile, Delhi recorded 4,235 fresh cases of coronavirus and 29 deaths on Sunday. The Delhi government on Sunday asked 28 private hospitals to reserve 80 per cent of their total ICU beds for COVID-19 patients, reported Hindustan Times.

Tracking COVID-19 vaccine progress: The clinical trials for the experimental COVID-19 vaccine, jointly developed by the Oxford University and British-Swedish pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca, have resumed in the UK. The trials were paused after a suspected adverse effect of the vaccine was reported in a patient in the UK. However, after getting a clearance by the UK’s Medicines Health Regulatory Authority, AstraZeneca on Saturday said the trials have been resumed. In India, Pune-based Serum Institute is awaiting further instructions from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) for resumption of trials for the vaccine.    

Health Ministry issues post-COVID management protocol: The Health Ministry on Sunday issued a set of follow-up guidelines for COVID-19 recovered patients.  This includes mandatory use of mask, hand and respiratory hygiene and physical distancing, resumption of professional work in a graded manner, breathing exercises as prescribed by physician, self-health monitoring at home, among other measures.

The first follow-up visit (physical or electronic) should take place within a week post-discharge, preferably at the same hospital where the patient underwent COVID-19 treatment. If patients prescribed home-isolation complain of persisting symptoms, they must visit nearest health facility.

Global corona update: The global coronavirus tally is nearing the 30-million or 3-crore mark. As per Worldometer, of the total 29,185,779 cases, 72,26,476 are active, 2,10,31,016 have recovered and 9,28,287 have succumbed to the disease.

In Australia’s Melbourne, 74 people were arrested by the police on Sunday during an anti-lockdown protest. According to an AP report, 176 infringement notices were issued for flouting health officer’s directions. In Germany’s Munich, nearly 8,000 people participated in a march on Saturday against COVID-19 restrictions imposed by the authorities.
