India cases and toll: India recorded 70,588 cases of coronavirus and 776 deaths in 24 hours, between 8 am Monday and 8 am Tuesday. This is a sharp drop from 82,170 COVID-19 cases and 1,039 deaths recorded the day before. India’s coronavirus tally now stands at 61,45,291, which includes 96,318 fatalities, according to the data shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on its website.

The drop in daily cases coincided with the drop in COVID-19 testing on Sunday—it fell to 7,09,394 tests from nearly 15 lakh conducted on Thursday. The active cases have also seen a decline—against more than 10 lakh cases about a fortnight ago, the numbers have come down to 9,47,576. A total of 51,01,397 people have recovered from the illness; the recovery rate stands at 83.01 per cent.

Massive spike in cases in Kerala: With an uninterrupted spike in daily cases, Kerala’s coronavirus count has reached 1,79,922—57,957 active cases, 1,21,268 recoveries and 697 deaths. The southern state recorded 4,538 cases and 20 deaths in the last 24 hours. According to The Times of India report, Kerala has witnessed a 126 per cent increase in active COVID-19 cases after Onam.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan has called an all-party meeting on Tuesday evening to discuss possible measures to contain the spread of the infection. At a press briefing on Monday, the Kerala CM said that the government is not in favour of a total lockdown, but more stringent measures could be in the offing.

Global corona update: By Tuesday morning, the coronavirus pandemic claimed over a million (over 10 lakh) lives across the world. The global toll for COVID-19 has reached 10,06,379, as per Worldometer. The US alone accounts for 2,09,808 COVID-19 deaths, followed by Brazil (1,42,161) and India (96,351).

These three countries have also recorded maximum cases of coronavirus. The global coronavirus tally has climbed to 3,35,52,166, which includes 76,64,838 active cases and 2,48,80,949 recoveries. Of the currently infected patients, 65,318 are in serious or critical condition.

A national COVID-19 clinical registry was also launched simultaneously—it will be a repository of data on clinical symptoms, laboratory investigations, management protocols and outcomes in COVID-19 patients.
