A detergent is an essential when it comes to your daily laundry and washing duties. It effectively cleans dirt, grease and grime that gather on your garments, while also removing stains and stench.

To find the right detergent, you must understand what works best for your clothes. It also depends on what kind of dirt and stains you are looking to remove from your clothes.

Options to choose from

  • Liquid detergents are good at treating greasy, oily stains. They can also be used for pretreatment before removing oily stains. However, be on your guard against overusing them.
  • Powder detergents, which are relatively cheaper, can be used for everyday wash loads. They rinse the clothes well and remove ground-in dirt, dust and mud stains. Make sure you wash thoroughly to get rid of any lingering residue—you may have to use warm water should cold water be unable to perform the job.

If you have a sensitive skin or are prone to allergies, check whether the detergent you are using is adversely affecting your skin. In case it is irritating your skin or triggering an allergic reaction, it is best to avoid them.

What’s best for your washing machine?

A high-efficiency (HE) laundry detergent is an invaluable companion for your washing machine. It comes with a formula that can suspend soil and dirt particles in less water, forming fewer suds, thereby ensuring easy washing without detergent residues sticking to cloth fabrics. They are, therefore, a must-have in case your machine is a front-loading one (that operates on lesser quantities of water). They can also be used in top-loaders that use relatively more water to wash and rinse clothes. You just need to ensure that you use a lesser quantity of the HE detergent to control the quantity of froth formed.
