Packing it all in

Commonly known as the BB cream, a beauty balm or a blemish balm is a combination of a moisturizer, a primer, a foundation and a sunscreen. It’s a lightweight formula, much like a tinted moisturizer, but with bigger benefits. So, instead of wasting precious morning time by slathering different products on your face (that can sometimes make the face look too heavy and made-up), all you need to do is apply a pea-sized amount of BB cream and you are sorted. An all-in-one skin hero, BB cream is the one product you can carry in your purse and be sure that you would be ready to put your best face forward, anytime of the day.

It’s “a multi-step skincare regimen in one application [that] provides more coverage than tinted moisturizer,” Lauren Serra, lead trainer and senior makeup artist at Blushington in NYC, tells Good Housekeeping.

Unique composition

While the main purpose of a moisturizer is to hydrate the skin and that of a foundation is to give it a flawless look, a BB cream does all that and more. Other than offering a light tint to conceal skin imperfections, such as dark circles, blemish, pigmentation and acne scars, most BB creams come packed with antioxidants and sun protection features to improve your skin’s health and keep it safe from environmental damage too. Some BB creams are also fortified with potent ingredients that can help fight acne and refine fine lines and wrinkles.

Multipurpose tool

A BB cream can help you achieve a foundation-free, no-makeup flawless look. It’s lighter than a foundation and is especially good for day use. However, it’s versatile enough for you to use it as a base for your makeup for an evening get-together. The best part is, unlike some foundations, a BB cream does not sit heavy on the skin but rather makes it look dewy and healthy. However, the downside is that it does not provide full coverage (if you’re looking to mask major flaws) and is more of a complexion quick-fix.
