If you are a baking enthusiast, then one of the things you can’t do without is a pastry brush. Also known as a basting brush, this is a multi-purpose utensil. From applying melted butter and egg wash to your cake or pie to glazing your chicken or just removing the excess sugar off your desserts, a pastry brush can do it all.
You can choose from nylon, silicone and natural fibres. If you are working with thick liquids (sauces), a silicone brush would be ideal. Easy to clean, some silicone brushes can be dishwasher-safe too. However, when working with delicate dough, you may want to use a natural fibre brush. Brushes with natural bristles should be hand-washed and need to be replaced more frequently compared to a silicone brush. Nylon brushes, in comparison, last longer, but you may find them better with spreading thicker liquids.
The size of the pastry brush handle depends on the kind of cooking you are into. If you are working on something very delicate and intricate, a brush with a shorter handle will give you a better grip. Otherwise, a brush with a longer handle can be ideal when working with very hot items.
Pastry brushes can have handles made of wood, plastic and even metal. Natural brushes usually have wooden handles with a sturdy grip. More often than not, silicone and nylon brushes come with plastic handles, which are easy to clean and maintain.
Pro-tip: Choose a brush with soft and flexible bristles. It is better to use separate brushes for sweet and savoury dishes.
