A lot can happen over supper—from enjoying great food to holding meaningful conversations over dessert. A well-designed table can add to your supper and dinner experience.

A good dining table should ideally have a solid build so that it can carry a heavy load. Usually, people go for medium- to large-sized tables that can also double as centre-pieces. However, check the space where you want to place the table before making a purchase. There are options available if you are short on space, such as extendable or folding tables. Keep an eye on your budget too, and make sure your dining table lasts for at least five to ten years.

What type should you choose?

A dining table should be able to complement your space and interiors. It can come in a variety of styles, from traditional to contemporary to more rustic options.

Traditional dining tables are made of varieties of wood such as walnut, mahogany, oak or teak. You can opt for marble, quartz and granite table-tops too. If they are designed in the classical style, they are likely to have curved legs for a touch of elegance.

Modern or contemporary tables can come in wood, glass or metal variants. While glass tables can make a room look brighter, they are only moderately easy to clean as they are prone to fingerprint stains. For more durability, you can opt for tables made with medium-density fibreboard (MDF) which are also quite easy to maintain.

If you are looking to experiment, you can go for a Scandinavian-style table which is sleek and minimal with slim tops and well-angled legs. Opt for a table with decorative patterns only if you are using it occasionally.

The right seating arrangement

Some dining tables come with their own set of chairs with similar make. Go for a seating arrangement that is in sync with the style and shape of the table. From classic, arched chairs to stools or bench-style chairs, you can experiment to add variety to your dining space.
