Once you start searching for baby carriers, you will be amazed at the variety and the features they come with. But there are some basics you need to keep in mind before you decide on a baby carrier:

Carrying position

a) Hammock-like or sling-like: Ideal for newborns.

b) Front, but inward-facing: You carry the baby in front of you with the baby facing you. Some also allow you to carry your baby facing outwards. Here, your body acts as a good head support for the baby.

c) Backpack-style: Babies can be carried on the back, in an upright position. These are better for slightly older babies who like looking around.

Height and weight

Always check what the carriers say about the ideal height and weight they can carry. They come in different sizes so a close examination of the specifications can help you make an informed decision.

Comfort

This is one of the most important things while choosing a carrier. Go for a carrier that is most comfortable for you and the baby—it should have strong shoulder straps which can be adjusted. Broad and padded shoulder straps and a broad waist strap can distribute the baby’s weight evenly.

Breathable fabric

A baby will feel a bit warmer than usual in the carrier. Therefore, for warmer places, go for carriers that have inner linings made of breathable cotton-blend fabric which can be easily washed. Too much padding can make the carrier warm and your baby uncomfortable. In a colder environment, you can consider carriers made of fleece or ones with extra padding.

Portability

Some baby carriers look like complicated contraptions and are not easy to pack and carry. Choose one that you find easy to operate, especially if you are always on the move and have to take your baby with you.
