Prabuddha Dasgupta (1956–2012) was a self-taught photographer who straddled the worlds of art and fashion photography effortlessly. In the series Edge of Faith, which was published as a compilation by Seagull Books in 2009, he creates an intimate portrait of the Catholic community in Goa. Even though he intended to capture a community torn between their Portuguese faith, culture and post-Independence identity, the above photograph is an instance where his work transcends his intention. Sacha, the central figure in the above photograph, oozes confidence. Rooted in the past (represented by her parents), she looks assertively into the camera and the future ahead.
