Cookware is one of the essentials of any modern kitchen, and it is the kind and combination of tools used that often determines the merit of the meal you cook.

When it comes to buying non-stick cookware, extra attention should be paid to their make, materials used, the coating, brand and pricing. Be it a frying pan, saucepan or pots, make sure you invest in a set that promises a certain longevity—it’s likely that you’ll end up using the set for a long time.

Here are some guidelines to help you buy a safe and durable non-stick set of cookware:

Check out the level of safety

Some non-stick cooking surfaces have a coating of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a harmful chemical, which can potentially cause cancer. So steer clear of such products and make sure you research and verify the manufacturing process employed before buying them.

It’s advisable to opt for one with a water-repellent coating: Go for a ceramic one or a Teflon one. But ensure that you don’t overheat them as the coating starts to disintegrate releasing poisonous fumes.

Check the material used

Non-stick wares made of aluminum (non-anodized) are lightweight but get heated up pretty quickly. So you have to be extra careful in using them. An anodized one is a better option. Also stainless steel cookware may be able to endure higher temperatures, but they are mostly non-stick. Hence, cleaning them turns out to be quite the chore. They are also quite heavy and difficult to carry.

Settle for a value price

It is okay to spend a little more for a better non-stick ware with greater durability. However, keep in mind that with use, the coating will eventually wear off, which might affect heating and other functions of the product. Make sure your buy is value-based.
