When one imagines a nicely made bed, a quality mattress, comfortable pillows, and a clean, well-spun bed sheet invariably come to the mind.

Getting the bed sheet right is absolutely essential when setting up the bed of your dreams. You should ensure that it is made of a fabric that is soft, durable and easy on your skin. At the same time, it should be durable enough to bear the strain of several washes through a year. Also, keep in mind that, as a hygienic practice, you should change your bed sheets at regular intervals. Here are some of the other things to be aware of while buying a bed sheet.

Measure the size of your bed and mattress

The size of the bed sheet you buy will depend, of course, on the size of the bed you are looking to put it on; a queen-sized bed may need a different-sized sheet from the one with which you covered the king-sized one. However, you will also need to factor in the thickness of the mattress on your bed to ensure that the sheet covers all corners without folds, creases or leaving spots uncovered.

Choose a suitable material

When the mercury peaks, a soft cotton bed sheet is perhaps your best bet for maximum comfort. They are breathable as they allow air to pass through. You could also opt for linen bed sheets, which may not be as soft as the cotton ones, but are more durable and can equally keep the bed cool.

When the temperature dips, you should ideally look for flannel or silk bed sheets. If you are looking for a glamorous look, satin bed sheets should do the trick.

Take care of bed sheets while cleaning

The level of care you need to take while washing your bed sheets, which collect hair, sweat, oil and dirt fairly rapidly, depends on the fabric. Cotton and linen sheets are hand- and machine-washable, but do read the instructions on how to clean them. However, it is advisable not to do the same for silk and satin sheets; they should be sent to the dry cleaners. Furthermore, while direct sunlight is good for killing any residual germs after washing, exposure to it can damage satin and silk sheets. Hence, caution needs to be exercised while drying sheets too.

Pro tip: You can customize your bed sheet with bright colours, floral or geometric designs. However, should you choose to do it yourself, make sure you do not end up staining it which may show up prominently against lighter backgrounds and may be tough to remove.
