Who doesn’t love flaunting a cool pair of sunglasses when stepping out in the sun? But, there’s more to sunglasses than just style. They protect your eyes and reduce glare so that you feel more comfortable when facing the sun.

Here a few things you need to keep in mind when choosing that perfect pair for your eyes:

Face shape

You may have spent several thousands of rupees on branded eyewear but that effort will go waste if the glasses don’t suit you. Know your face shape before choosing an eyewear, be it glasses or sunglasses.

If you have a round face, rectangular frames would suit you. If you have a square face with a prominent jawline, round and oval frames will lend softness to your face. And if you have an oval face, then pretty much any pair of sunglasses would look good on you.

Lens colour

You can never ignore the colour of the lenses once you have decided on the shape of the frame. Green-tinted glasses help in reducing the glare and transmit the colour better than other glasses. Red or pink tints are known to increase the visual contrast. Yellow-tinted glasses work well in hazy or low-light conditions, a reason why many sports-persons wear them.

UV protection

You will find glasses in all shapes, sizes and colours. But, one of the most important things you should look for in a pair of sunglasses is how much ultraviolet (UV) radiation it can block. As per the American National Standards Institute, standard sunglasses should block 60-92 per cent of visible light and UVA, and 95-99 per cent of UVB.

“For sunglasses to be fully protective against UV radiation, the lenses must absorb all UV radiation and side protection should be provided,” says the World Health Organization (WHO). If you are an outdoor person who likes hiking or going to high-altitude places where the sun in blazing, a pair of sunglasses with good UV protection is non-negotiable.
