There is no denying the importance of a suitcase. Whether you are planning a vacation or a ‘workation’, you cannot travel without a suitcase. Some of us also use suitcases to store clothes if the wardrobe doesn’t have enough space.

However, before settling for a suitcase, it is important you do some groundwork. Decide on the size, colour and design that best fit your needs. Check for durability too; you don’t want your purchase to last just one season.   

Another factor to consider when choosing a suitcase is—you should be able to spot it in the sea of baggage at airports and stations. Maybe, opt for a bright colour or a less-than-ordinary print? 

Hard or soft?

Usually made of leather, nylon or polyester, soft-side suitcases are lightweight and let you squeeze in those extra clothes. Most soft-side suitcases have one or two pockets in the front to store your books or some essentials. Because of their make, you may also find it easier to fit them in the overhead baggage counters. Look for suitcases that are waterproof and stain-proof so that you don’t have to worry about travelling in the rain.  

Hard-side suitcases are usually made of polycarbonate, and are better suited if you are carrying fragile items —think glass, ceramic etc. Because of their casing, these suitcases are also sturdier compared to their soft-side counterparts.
