The hype around hypertension is real. It is a commonly found medical condition in adults involving raised blood pressure levels. According to the World Health Organization(WHO), only one in five adults suffering from hypertension have it under control. Even more alarming is the fact that almost 46% of adults suffering from this condition are unaware of the problem and only less than half are diagnosed or treated. In India, almost 30-35% of the adult population suffers from hypertension or high blood pressure.

Hypertension is directly linked to risks for a host of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Following World Hypertension Day observed on May 17, RD caught up with Dr. J. P. S. Sawhney, Chairman of the Department of Cardiology, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi in an interactive session to understand ways to monitor, control and manage elevated blood pressure levels and regulate its impact on heart health.
