Reform: At Bhopal Central Jail, rehabilitation is taking the shape of handbags, baskets, beauty kits and fresh starts. Through a series of vocational programmes, women inmates are learning practical skills that can help them build independent lives after prison. Last year, a Maharashtra-based NGO trained inmates to weave eco-friendly hats, bags and baskets from water hyacinths. Entrepreneur Tavishi Srivastava now works with 31 women making beaded handbags, purses and phone holders that are sold in cities including Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. Together, they have earned more than ₹5.75 lakh in the past nine months. Some of the most inspiring lessons come from within the prison itself, where a transwoman convict and another inmate are training 25 women to become beauticians—proof that meaningful reform can begin from the inside out.

Wildlife: The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway has done more than slash travel time—it is also making journeys safer for wildlife. A new report shows the expressway’s innovative design is helping animals move freely through a vital biodiversity corridor outside Dehradun. A 10.97-km underpass along a 20-km stretch allows unobstructed wildlife movement. To assess its impact, the National Highways Authority of India and the Wildlife Institute of India monitored the area for 40 days using 150 camera traps and 29 sound recorders. They recorded 18 wildlife species, including elephants, nilgai, sambar, spotted deer and golden jackals, proving that thoughtful infrastructure can serve both people and nature.
