The gradual resumption of economic activity is accompanied by a surge in cases of COVID-19 across the country. India crossed the 2.5-lakh mark while Maharashtra surpassed China in terms of total COVID-19 cases reported so far. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has gone into self-quarantine after developing sore throat and fever and will get himself tested for COVID-19 on Tuesday.

Restaurants, places of worship, malls to open: As part of unlock 1.0, places of worship, malls and restaurants will open in most states on Monday. While restaurant kitchens were already allowed to run takeaway services, Monday will see them opening their doors to customers for dine-in as well, and run at 50 per cent occupancy. In places of worship, devotees have to wash their hands and feet with soap and water before entering the premises.
India COVID-19 cases at 2.5 lakh: On Monday, India’s coronavirus count rose to 2.56 lakh cases with 1.25 lakh active cases, 1.24 lakh recoveries and 7,135 deaths. A total of 9,983 fresh cases and 206 deaths were reported across the country in the last 24 hours. Along with the rise in inter-state travel, the cases that are being reassigned to states have also surged to 9,189—there is no update on recoveries and deaths under this category. Lakshadweep is the only UT to not have reported a COVID-19 case so far. Sikkim, which had zero coronavirus cases a few weeks ago, now has seven active cases.

Delhi reserves state-run hospitals for its residents: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday announced that state-run as well as some private hospitals will be reserved only for the residents of the capital. The chief minister had earlier sought suggestions from residents on whether health facilities in Delhi should be reserved only for its citizens. Centre-run hospitals, like AIIMS, and super-specialty hospitals can continue to admit patients from across the country. Simultaneously, Delhi will also open its borders with neighbouring states, which were closed since last Monday.
Maharashtra has more cases than China: With 85,975 confirmed coronavirus cases so far, Maharashtra surpassed China’s tally of 83,040 cases. On Sunday, the state reported more than 3,000 fresh cases. Mumbai alone accounts for 48,774 of the total cases reported so far. Thane has reported 13,014 confirmed coronavirus cases. The state has 43,601 active cases, 39,314 recoveries and 3,060 deaths.
Tamil Nadu and Delhi are next in the table, in terms of total coronavirus cases recorded so far, at 31,667 and 27,654 cases, respectively.
Global corona update: On Monday, New Zealand became one of the few countries that have managed to eradicate coronavirus. The country has not reported a fresh COVID-19 patient in the last 17 days and the last one has also recovered.
Meanwhile, the global COVID-19 cases have surged to nearly 71 lakh with more than 4 lakh deaths and 34.61 lakh recoveries, as per the data gathered by worldometer, a website that tracks coronavirus cases across the world. The US has now more than 20 lakh cases followed by Brazil, which has nearly 7 lakh confirmed cases. Our neighbour Pakistan has reported more than 1 lakh COVID-19 cases with 2,067 deaths.
