An India Today report quoted sources in the Ministry of Home Affairs as saying that Lockdown 5.0 will largely focus on 11 cities—Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Surat, Ahmedabad, Pune, Kolkata, Indore, Jaipur, Thane and Bengaluru—that account for 70 per cent of the total coronavirus cases in the country. Where Delhi stands: The national capital, which had reported a slight dip in fresh cases the day before, reported a huge spike in the last 24 hours. With 792 fresh cases, Delhi saw its highest-ever single-day surge in COVID-19 cases. With this, the total case count stands at 15,257 even as 7,264 people have also recovered from the illness. The death toll is climbing at a steady rate—with 303 deaths so far, Delhi is only behind Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
Where Maharashtra stands: The western state, which has seen an improvement in the doubling rate of the infection, reported 2,190 fresh coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking the state’s COVID-19 count to 56,948. During the same period, 105 fatalities were reported—the state’s death toll has climbed to 1,897. Mumbai, which has been the ground zero for COVID-19 infection in the state, reported a little over 1,000 fresh cases in the last 24 hours with Dharavi recording 18 new cases on Wednesday. With a slight dip in the growth rate of daily new cases, Mumbai may see some relaxations post-Lockdown 4.0. The city alone accounts for more than 32,000 coronavirus cases in India.
Global corona update: The US, which has seen a slowing down of infection in the last few days, reached a grim milestone of 1 lakh deaths due to COVID-19. According to worldometer, a website that tracks coronavirus figures real-time, the country has reported 17.45 lakh confirmed cases with the toll at 1.02 lakh.
South Korea, which had garnered praise for controlling the spread of coronavirus, is witnessing a fresh outbreak of the infection. On Wednesday, South Korea reported 40 new coronavirus cases after it relaxed social distancing norms and even reopened schools.
Globally, the coronavirus case tally stands at 57.90 lakh with 24.97 lakh recoveries and 3.57 lakh deaths. After the US, Brazil has reported maximum number of COVID-19 cases (4.14 lakh) with more than 25,000 people losing their lives to the infection.
Story of hope: Along with the gut-wrenching stories on the plight of migrant workers across the country, several stories of kindness and courage during this difficult time have also come to fore. One such story is of Pappan Singh Gahlot, a farm owner in north Delhi, who arranged flight tickets for the 10 migrants working on his mushroom farm, reported The Times of India. Gahlot spent Rs 68,000 to put them on a flight to Patna.
