With just two more days to go before Lockdown 4.0 comes to an end, Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday held a discussion with the chief ministers of various states on the way ahead after 31 May. Even as restrictions have been eased in the fourth phase of lockdown, India’s coronavirus case count has continued to surge. On Friday, India’s COVID-19 tally stood at over 1.65 lakh, making it the ninth worst-hit country by the virus globally.

India cases and toll: The number of fresh coronavirus cases continues to climb, with India adding 7,466 new cases in the last 24 hours. During the same period, 175 deaths due to the infection and co-morbidities were reported across the country. With this, the country’s coronavirus case count stands at 1,65,799, according to latest data shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. On Friday morning, India had 89,987 active cases of COVID-19, 71,105 recoveries with the toll rising to 4,706.

Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar and Odisha are showing a steady increase in the number of COVID-19 cases. They have reported 2,036, 3,296 and 1,660 confirmed coronavirus cases so far, respectively.

Where Delhi stands: The national capital recorded its single-biggest surge in a day as 1,024fresh cases were reported in the last 24 hours. Delhi, with 16,281 confirmed COVID-19 cases so far, is now the third worst-hit state/UT by the infection, after Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu in terms of number of cases.
