India cases and toll: India is well on course to hit the 2-lakh mark soon, with coronavirus case count now at nearly 1.99 lakh. On Tuesday morning, the data from Ministry of Health and Family Welfare shows 97,581 active cases, 95,526 recoveries and 5,598 deaths. A total of 8,171 fresh cases of coronavirus were reported in the last 24 hours. During the same period, 204 people died due to infection or co-morbidities. Of the total active cases, 6,414 cases are currently being reassigned to states.
Delhi unlock 1.0: The Delhi government on Monday said that it is scrapping the odd-even scheme for opening of shops, thereby allowing all shops to open at a time. For industrial units, the staggered timings have been withdrawn while barber shops and salons have been allowed to open although spas will continue to remain shut. More than one passenger can sit in an auto and e-rickshaw while motorists can have a pillion rider. However, the Delhi border has been sealed for a week, but movement of essential services will be allowed.

West Bengal shows surge: While Maharashtra remains the worst-hit state by the pandemic with more than 70,000 cases of coronavirus so far, some other states are reporting a spike even as restrictions are gradually being eased. West Bengal, which has seen a large chunk of its migrant workforce return, registered its single-biggest surge in COVID-19 cases on Sunday. The state has 3,141 active cases, one of the highest in the country, after Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Gujarat. Its total count stands at 5,772 with 2,306 recoveries and 325 deaths.
A cure for COVID-19? Russia, which has been one of the worst-affected countries by coronavirus, has approved a drug to treat COVID-19 patients. The drug registered under the name Avifavir can be given to patients at hospitals from next week, reported Reuters. Japan is also holding trials for the same drug, known as Avigan there, but is yet to approve it for use. Meanwhile, the search for a vaccine to prevent COVID-19 is still on.
Global corona update: The number of coronavirus cases globally has climbed to 63.66 lakh with recoveries also nearing the 30-lakh mark. More than 3.77 lakh people have succumbed to the infection or died of co-morbidities, according to worldometer, a website that tracks global COVID-19 numbers real-time.
Brazil continues to report a surge in coronavirus cases with the tally going way past the 5-lakh mark and over 30,000 people losing their life due to the virus. Russia, third worst-hit country in terms of caseload, is reporting a fresh surge, with 9,035 new cases registered on Monday. The country, so far, has recorded 4.14 lakh cases of coronavirus with 4,855 deaths.
Finally, there’s good news for Spain, a global COVID-19 hotspot a few weeks ago, as the country did not report a single coronavirus death on Monday, a first since March.
Story of hope: In these difficult times when many can’t even afford to buy masks to protect themselves and their families, 56-year-old Laxmi Das decided to lend a helping hand, in her own way. Shocked at the steep prices of masks, she decided to make some herself and distributed them among the domestic helps in her neighbourhood. Buoyed by the response, she started making more masks, 25-40 every day, while her son came up with the idea of setting up mask dispensers in the busy market areas in the vicinity.
