India cases and toll: India posted a record surge in daily cases of coronavirus on Wednesday. The country added 83,883 new cases to its COVID-19 tally, which has now reached 38,53,406, as per the figures shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Since Saturday, India has been reporting more than 78,000 daily cases, barring Monday when 69,921 were recorded. Wednesday’s spike in daily cases is not only the highest for the country, but also globally.

In the last 24 hours, 1,043 COVID-19 fatalities were reported across the country. With this, the country’s coronavirus toll climbed to 67,376. India also conducted a record number of COVID-19 tests on Wednesday. A total of 11,72,179 tests were conducted across the country.

India currently has 8,15,538 active cases of coronavirus while 29,70,492 people have recovered from the illness. Looking at the current trend, India could soon overtake Brazil (with 40 lakh cases) as the second worst-hit country by the coronavirus.  

Maharashtra records more than 17,000 cases: The western state reported 17,433 cases of coronavirus on Wednesday, the highest single-day surge so far. Maharashtra currently has 2,02,048 active cases of coronavirus; the recoveries stand at 5,98,496.

The state’s COVID-19 toll breached the 25,000-mark on Wednesday and is now at 25,195. According to a PTI report, of the 292 deaths reported on Wednesday, 201 took place in the last 48 hours, 55 in the last one week and 36 prior to that.

Maharashtra’s coronavirus tally has now reached 8,25,739. If one were to compare the state’s tally to the global data on Worldometer, Maharashtra’s count is higher than Peru’s which is the fifth worst-hit country by the pandemic...
