A day after a slight dip in daily cases (83,809), India once again recorded more than 90,000 daily cases of coronavirus (90,123) between 8 am Tuesday and 8 am Wednesday, as per the data shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Of the total 50,20,359 cases of coronavirus, 9,95,933 are active. So far, 39,42,360 people have recovered from the illness while 82,066 succumbed to it—a record 1,290 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. India conducted 11,16,842 tests for COVID-19 on Tuesday.
Where Delhi stands: The national capital recorded a spike in daily cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours. With 4,263 cases, Delhi’s COVID-19 tally rose to 2,25,796. The active cases have gone up to 29,787, nearly double of what the numbers were end of August. So far, 1,91,203 people have recovered from the disease while 4,806 succumbed to it. A total of 36 people lost their lives to COVID-19 on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, a sero-survey conducted in the capital in the first week of August found that 79 of the 250 COVID-19 survivors did not have antibodies against the virus.

Confirmed cases of reinfection: After researchers at the University of Hong Kong reported the world’s first confirmed case of COVID-19 reinfection last month, two healthcare workers from a Noida hospital could be India’s first genetically proven cases of reinfection. According to a report by The Times of India, researchers at the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB) have also established reinfection in four health workers from Mumbai.
Plasma therapy not that effective? The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Tuesday said that early evidence from a randomized controlled trial on the efficacy of plasma therapy on COVID-19 patients has shown that it neither reduced mortality nor prevented the progression of the illness from moderate to severe category. The study, which included 464 patients across 39 hospitals, is still being peer-reviewed.
Global corona update: The global coronavirus count has reached 2,97,27,389 with 72,45,726 active cases, 2,15,42,477 recoveries and 9,39,186 deaths, as per Worldometer. Of the total active cases, 60,915 are in serious or critical condition.
The US with 67,88,147 cases of coronavirus is leading the global tally. In a dubious distinction, it has also become the first country to record more than 2 lakh COVID-19 deaths. In Europe, several countries are reporting a fresh surge in infections. Countries like Spain, Italy and the UK have reported more COVID-19 deaths per million population than the US, as per the latest figures released by the World Health Organization (WHO).
