India cases and toll: On Thursday morning, India crossed yet another grim milestone by breaching the 12-lakh mark for total coronavirus cases recorded across the country. Of the 12,38,635 confirmed cases of COVID-19, India has added more than 50 per cent of these cases in the month of July. In the last 24 hours, India added a record 45,720 fresh cases of coronavirus and 1,129 deaths.
Currently, there are 4,26,167 active cases while 7,82,606 people have recovered from the illness, according to the data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Coronavirus has claimed 29,861 lives across the country—India’s death toll is among the highest in the world. A total of 3,50,823 COVID-19 tests were conducted across the country on Wednesday.

10-day lockdown in Bhopal: In a bid to check the spike in cases in Bhopal, the Madhya Pradesh government has announced a 10-day lockdown in the capital, starting from 8 p.m. of 24 July till 8 a.m. of 4 August. Earlier, a week-long lockdown was enforced in Gwalior. More than 1,000 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Bhopal over the last nine days, with 157 cases recorded in the last 24 hours. Madhya Pradesh’s coronavirus tally is at 24,842 cases with 7,236 active cases, 16,836 recoveries and 770 deaths.
Andhra Pradesh records its biggest spike: A day after reporting nearly 5,000 fresh cases of coronavirus, Andhra Pradesh posted a record surge on Thursday. The state added 6,045 new cases of COVID-19 to its tally, which has now climbed to 64,713 cases. The state also recorded 65 deaths due to COVID-19—the toll is at 823. Visakhapatnam reported more than a 1,000 fresh cases on Thursday, followed by East Godavari and Guntur districts. Andhra Pradesh currently has 31,763 active cases while 32,127 people have recovered from the illness.
Global corona update: The World Health Organization on Wednesday said that a vaccine against COVID-19 could be available by early next year. The experimental vaccine being developed by the Oxford University and pharmaceutical major AstraZeneca is one of the top contenders after showing promising results in the first stages of clinical trials. Pune-based Serum Institute of India is one of the global partners that would manufacture the vaccine once the results of the trials are satisfactory. In India, the vaccine would be named Covishield.
Meanwhile, the global tally for coronavirus continues to climb. As per Worldometer, a website which tracks the number of COVID-19 across countries, the global coronavirus count is 1,53,75,005 cases with 93,49,420 recoveries and 6,30,222 fatalities. Mexico has been reporting a worrying increase in COVID-19 deaths—the toll has climbed to 41,190 with 3,62,274 confirmed cases so far. Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro has again tested positive for the infection a third time since 7 July.
