With more than 26,500 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, India’s coronavirus tally is inching close to the 8-lakh mark. Maharashtra (6,875 new cases) and Tamil Nadu (4,231) remain the biggest contributors. Karnataka, with 2,228 fresh cases in a day, is witnessing a surge even as Delhi has managed to check its number (2,187 new cases) for close to a week now.

India cases and toll: India added a record 26,506 new cases of coronavirus on Thursday, taking the country’s tally to 7,93,802 cases. Of the COVID-19 cases recorded so far, 4,95,512 have recovered while 21,604 have succumbed to the infection—475 people lost their lives to the virus in the last 24 hours. India currently has 2,76,685 active cases of coronavirus, according to the data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). A total of 2,83,659 people were tested for COVID-19 on Thursday.

How is Tamil Nadu faring: After reporting under 4,000 daily cases for the last three days, Tamil Nadu again recorded an uptick, with the state adding 4,231 fresh cases of coronavirus to its tally on Thursday. With this, the state’s COVID-19 count stands at 1,26,581—there are 46,655 active cases while 78,161 people have recovered from the illness and 1,765 succumbed to it.

A central team is in the state to assess Tamil Nadu’s containment strategy. On Thursday, the team led by additional secretary in MohFW took stock of the situation in Chennai, which alone has recorded nearly 75,000 cases of coronavirus.
