India cases and toll: After a slight drop in daily cases on Monday, India once again recorded more than 78,000 coronavirus cases on Tuesday. With 78,357 fresh cases, the country’s COVID-19 tally rose to 37,69,523, which includes 8,01,282 active cases, 29,01,908 recoveries and 66,333 fatalities. The number of COVID-19 deaths also saw an uptick on Tuesday, with 1,045 people succumbing to the disease across the country. For a second day in a row, India conducted more than 10 lakh COVID-19 tests. On Tuesday, 10,12,367 tests were conducted across the country.
1 in every 5 exposed to virus in Chennai: One in every five persons in Chennai has been exposed to the coronavirus, as per the findings of the sero-survey conducted in the Tamil Nadu capital. “The reading (inference) is 21.5 per cent of Chennai’s population reached the immunity levels by July-end,” Greater Chennai Corporation commissioner G. Prakash told PTI. The survey’s sample size was 12,000 and it was conducted between 18 and 28 July.

Global corona update: The global COVID-19 count has climbed to 2,59,04,605 with 68,46,826 active cases, 1,81,96,508 recoveries and 8,61,271 deaths, as per Worldometer. Of the currently infected patients, 60,541 are in serious or critical condition.

Meanwhile, Malaysia has decided that long-term pass holders from India, Indonesia and the Philippines will not be allowed to enter the country from 7 September, as part of the measures to curb the spread of COVID-19.
Story of hope: Medical professionals are at the forefront of the global fight against the coronavirus pandemic. Dr Ranjeet Nikam, a 30-year-old doctor in Pune, decided to get behind the wheel when he realized that the ambulance driver supposed to ferry a patient from a care centre to a hospital suddenly fell ill.
The 71-year-old patient’s oxygen saturation level had dipped while undergoing treatment for COVID-19. As his condition worsened, Nikam decided to drive the ambulance himself with another doctor, Rajendra Rajpurohit, by his side. After driving to several hospitals, they managed to find an ICU bed for the critically-ill patient at a private hospital. The patient’s condition is now stable, reported PTI.
