India cases and toll: India recorded 78,512 cases of coronavirus and 971 deaths in the last 24 hours. With this, India’s COVID-19 tally climbed to 36,21,245 while the death toll mounted to 64,469, as per the data shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. India currently has 7,81,975 active cases while 27,74,801 people have recovered from the illness. A total of 8,46,278 tests for COVID-19 were conducted on Sunday.

In a month, India has added nearly 20 lakh cases of coronavirus to its tally—the total caseload was 16,38,870 on 31 July (till 8 am). During the same period, 28,722 COVID-19 fatalities were reported across the country. From 25-31 August (till 8 am), India reported nearly 4.54 lakh cases of coronavirus.

How is Maharashtra faring: Maharashtra recorded 16,000-plus cases of coronavirus for a second consecutive day. After 16,286 cases on Saturday, the state reported 16,408 fresh cases of coronavirus on Sunday. The state’s COVID-19 count has reached 7,80,689 with 1,93,889 active cases, 5,62,401 recoveries and 24,399 fatalities. In the last 24 hours, 296 people succumbed to the disease.

Five districts in the state, according to The Indian Express report, have recorded a 400 per cent jump in COVID-19 cases from 29 July to 29 August. These districts are Beed, Sangli, Kolhapur, Osmanabad and Nagpur. Beed, for instance, has reported a 603 per cent increase in cases and 521 per cent jump in deaths. In contrast, Mumbai, recorded 28.04 per cent rise in cases during the same period, for Thane, it was 43.8 per cent.
