India reported 75,809 cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours and the overall tally climbed to 42,80,422, according to the data shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. India conducted 10,98,621 tests for COVID-19 on Monday.
Of the total tally, there are 8,83,697 active cases of coronavirus while 33,23,950 people have recovered from the illness. The COVID-19 toll is now at 72,775 with 1,133 deaths reported on Monday.
Andhra Pradesh crosses 5-lakh mark: Andhra Pradesh became the second state after Maharashtra to record more than 5 lakh cases of coronavirus. The state reported 8,368 COVID-19 cases on Monday, taking the overall count to 5,06,493. Andhra Pradesh currently has 97,932 active cases of coronavirus while 4,04,074 people have recovered from the illness. The pandemic has claimed 4,487 lives in the state, including 70 on Monday.
Tracking COVID-19 vaccine updates: A senior World Health Organization (WHO) adviser on Monday said that the global health body is in talks with India over the latter joining the COVAX vaccine allocation plan. COVAX aims to provide equal access to member countries to the vaccines developed to fight COVID-19. “India is certainly eligible, like all countries in the world, to be part of the COVAX facility and discussions are ongoing in that regard,”

The US, with 64,85,575 coronavirus cases and 1,93,534 deaths, remains the worst-affected country by the pandemic. The US government this year could run the largest budget deficit since 1945, said an AP report. The country’s federal debt too could exceed the size of its economy. The last time this happened was in 1946.
Spain, meanwhile, became the second country in Europe (after Russia) to register more than 5 lakh cases of coronavirus even as schools reopened. The country’s COVID-19 tally stands at 5,25,549 with 29,516 deaths.
A story of hope: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected various sectors in different ways. Access to education, for instance, has become difficult for those who cannot afford a smartphone or a computer. A government school teacher in Tamil Nadu decided to come to the rescue of 16 such students by gifting them smartphones so that they too could attend online classes.
Not just that, the teacher has also assured her students that she would get their phones recharged until the school reopens. “Due to lockdown, I have been teaching my students through WhatsApp for the last few weeks. But some of them do not own a smartphone and (have) no money to recharge. This is why I decided to buy smartphones and distributed them to my students,” K. Bairavi, who teaches maths at Elambalur Government Higher Secondary School, told The New Indian Express.
