India cases and toll: After a drop in daily cases the day before, the number of fresh cases climbed again in the last 24 hours, between 8 am Tuesday and 8 am Wednesday, as the number of COVID-19 tests also went up post-weekend. With 80,472 new cases of coronavirus, India’s tally has reached 62,25,763, as per the data available on the website of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The number of active cases continues to be under 9.5 lakh (9,40,441) while more than 51.87 lakh people have recovered from the illness. At 97,497 fatalities, India’s COVID-19 toll is nearing the 1-lakh mark. After the US and Brazil, India will be the third country to achieve the grim milestone. In the last 24 hours, 1,179 people died as a result of COVID-19 across the country. India conducted 10,86,688 COVID-19 tests on Tuesday.
Kerala decides against lockdown: At the all-party meeting convened by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday evening, a decision to enforce lockdown in the state was ruled out. But there would be tighter curbs on gatherings and stricter implementation of social distancing norms to check the rapid rise in coronavirus cases in the state.

Karnataka records biggest single-day spike: Karnataka reported 10,453 cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, which is the biggest jump recorded by the state so far. With this, the state’s coronavirus tally has reached 5,92,911—1,07,756 active cases, 4,76,378 recoveries and 8,777 deaths.
Of the state’s total caseload, Bengaluru alone accounts for 2,28,437 COVID-19 cases. The state capital too reported a record surge in cases in the last 24 hours and added 4,868 new infections to its tally. Hassan and Mysuru are some of the other cities that are recording high number of infections on a daily basis.
Global corona update: The global coronavirus count has climbed to 3,38,44,031, which includes 76,83,087 active cases, 2,51,48,285 recoveries and 10,12,659 deaths, as per Worldometer. Of the currently infected patients, 65,977 are in serious or critical condition. The US remains the worst-hit country by the pandemic and has lost 2.10 lakh people to COVID-19. The country’s top infectious diseases’ expert Dr Anthony Fauci said the US is “not in a good place” as the daily cases continue to surge, reported CNBC.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday announced a set of agreements under which affordable COVID-19 rapid tests would be made available to low- and middle-income countries. These tests will provide results in 15-30 minutes instead of hours or days and “will enable expansion of testing, particularly in countries that do not have extensive laboratory facilities or trained health workers to implement molecular (polymerase-chain reaction or PCR) tests”.
