India cases and toll: After a drop in daily cases the day before, the number of fresh cases climbed again in the last 24 hours, between 8 am Tuesday and 8 am Wednesday, as the number of COVID-19 tests also went up post-weekend. With 80,472 new cases of coronavirus, India’s tally has reached 62,25,763, as per the data available on the website of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The number of active cases continues to be under 9.5 lakh (9,40,441) while more than 51.87 lakh people have recovered from the illness. At 97,497 fatalities, India’s COVID-19 toll is nearing the 1-lakh mark. After the US and Brazil, India will be the third country to achieve the grim milestone. In the last 24 hours, 1,179 people died as a result of COVID-19 across the country. India conducted 10,86,688 COVID-19 tests on Tuesday.

Kerala decides against lockdown: At the all-party meeting convened by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday evening, a decision to enforce lockdown in the state was ruled out. But there would be tighter curbs on gatherings and stricter implementation of social distancing norms to check the rapid rise in coronavirus cases in the state.

The state reported 7,354 cases of coronavirus and 22 deaths in the last 24 hours. Kerala’s active caseload has climbed to 61,869, one of the highest in the country after Maharashtra and Karnataka. The state’s overall COVID-19 tally is at 1,87,276, which includes 1,24,688 recoveries and 719 deaths.
