India cases and toll: With 86,052 cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours (between 8 am Thursday and 8 am Friday), India’s overall tally has climbed to 58,18,570 cases. This includes 9,70,116 active cases, 47,56,164 recoveries and 92,290 fatalities, as per the data available on the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare website.

India carried out a record 14,92,409 tests for COVID-19 on Thursday. The day before, 11,56,569 tests were conducted across the country. In the last 24 hours, 1,141 people succumbed to the disease—the fatality rate for COVID-19 is 1.59 per cent, the recovery rate stands at 81.74 per cent.

Where Delhi stands: Delhi has hit the peak for the second wave of COVID-19 infections, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Thursday. Experts, he said, predict that the number of cases could now decline. “From 1 July to 17 August, cases were in control. We noticed that cases increased and it reached 4,500 new Covid-19 cases on 17 September and are now coming down,” news agency ANI quoted the Delhi CM as saying.

In a first, a state has claimed to have reached the second wave of infections in the country. Delhi currently has 31,125 active cases of coronavirus while 2,24,375 people have recovered from the illness. In the last 24 hours, 36 people succumbed to the disease, taking the toll to 5,123. Delhi’s COVID-19 tally stands at 2,60,623. Meanwhile, Delhi’s Deputy CM Manish Sisodia who tested positive for COVID-19 has now been diagnosed with dengue as well.
