India added close to 25,000 fresh cases of COVID-19 even as the death toll went past the 21,000-mark. The country’s coronavirus tally is now at over 7.67 lakh cases with more than 4.76 lakh recoveries. The global tally has surged to more than 1.21 crore cases with 5.52 lakh deaths. The US reported nearly 55,000 fresh cases of coronavirus on Wednesday.

India cases and toll: India’s coronavirus tally rose to 7,67,296 cases on Thursday, with 2,69,789 active cases, 4,76,377 recoveries and 21,129 deaths. In the last 24 hours, India added 24,879 fresh cases of coronavirus, a significant jump from 22,752 cases recorded the previous day, according to the data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The death toll has gone past the 21,000-mark with 487 people succumbing to the infection on Wednesday. A total of 2,67,061 people were tested for COVID-19 on Wednesday.

Where Delhi stands: The Capital added 2,033 fresh cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours. With this, Delhi’s count is now at 1,04,864 cases with 23,452 active cases, 78,199 recoveries and 3,213 deaths. As part of a revised COVID response plan, the Delhi government has now decided to screen daily wagers, domestic helps, auto drivers and food suppliers—people who are part of ‘special surveillance groups’ or SSG—to check the rising number of ‘isolated’ COVID-19 cases reported from all the districts.         

How is Maharashtra faring: Ever since the pandemic struck India, Maharashtra has remained the worst-affected state by the virus. The western state’s coronavirus tally has climbed to 2,23,724 cases—countries like Germany and Italy have reported a total of 1,98,765 and 1,69,473 cases respectively.
