India cases and toll: India’s coronavirus tally rose to 7,67,296 cases on Thursday, with 2,69,789 active cases, 4,76,377 recoveries and 21,129 deaths. In the last 24 hours, India added 24,879 fresh cases of coronavirus, a significant jump from 22,752 cases recorded the previous day, according to the data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The death toll has gone past the 21,000-mark with 487 people succumbing to the infection on Wednesday. A total of 2,67,061 people were tested for COVID-19 on Wednesday.
Where Delhi stands: The Capital added 2,033 fresh cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours. With this, Delhi’s count is now at 1,04,864 cases with 23,452 active cases, 78,199 recoveries and 3,213 deaths. As part of a revised COVID response plan, the Delhi government has now decided to screen daily wagers, domestic helps, auto drivers and food suppliers—people who are part of ‘special surveillance groups’ or SSG—to check the rising number of ‘isolated’ COVID-19 cases reported from all the districts.

In the last 24 hours, Maharashtra reported 6,606 fresh cases of coronavirus and 198 deaths. The state currently has 91,084 active cases while 1,23,192 people have recovered from the illness and 9,448 succumbed to it. Mumbai alone has reported nearly 90,000 coronavirus cases and over 5,000 deaths so far.
Telangana, Karnataka continue to show a spike: Both the southern states have been reporting fresh cases of coronavirus in bulk on a daily basis. In the last 24 hours, Telangana added 1,924 new cases of the infection, taking its tally to 29,536 cases. Neighbouring state Karnataka recorded 2,062 fresh cases of COVID-19; with this, the state’s coronavirus count rose to 28,877 cases.
Tamil Nadu records a slight dip in numbers: After Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu is the worst-hit state by the virus, with its tally mounting to 1,22,350 cases. On Wednesday, the southern state recorded under 4,000 cases for a third consecutive day with 3,756 people testing positive for COVID-19. Of these, 1,261 fresh cases were in Chennai while 379 were reported in Madurai. Of the state’s total tally, 46,483 are active cases, 74,167 recoveries and 1,700 deaths. Sixty-four people died due to the virus on Wednesday.
Global corona update: The global COVID-19 tally has surged to 1,21,70,570 cases with 70,69,283 recoveries and 5,52,112 deaths, as per Worldometer, a website that tracks the spread of the infection across countries. With 55,000 new cases of coronavirus infection reported on Wednesday, the US tally crossed the 30-lakh mark. The country now has reported 31,58,932 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 1,34,862 deaths.
In Brazil, the second worst-hit country by the virus, the COVID-19 tally has climbed to 17,16,196 cases, with 68,055 deaths. Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro, who has tested positive for COVID-19, has vetoed COVID aid for the country’s Indigenous/ethnic population. “Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro has vetoed provisions of a law that obligated the federal government to provide drinking water, disinfectants and a guarantee of hospital beds to Indigenous communities amid the COVID-19 pandemic,” reported Al-Jazeera. The Indigenous population, which lives in remote areas where access to health care is limited, is at a greater risk of contracting the infection.
