India cases and toll: A day after reporting a little over 75,000 cases of coronavirus, the daily cases rose to 83,347 in the last 24 hours, between 8 am Tuesday and 8 am Wednesday. India’s COVID-19 tally has climbed to 56,46,010 with 9,68,377 active cases, 45,87,613 recoveries and 90,020 fatalities, according to the data available on the website of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

In the last 24 hours, 1,085 people have succumbed to the disease across the country—the fatality rate stands at 1.59 per cent while the recovery rate has improved to 81.25 per cent. On Tuesday, a total of 9,53,683 tests for COVID-19 were conducted across India.

At least 50 per cent efficacy must for COVID-19 vaccine: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Tuesday said that the efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine could be anywhere between 50 and 100 per cent. “100 per cent efficacy is not achieved in vaccines for respiratory viruses,” said ICMR chief Dr Balram Bhargava at a press briefing.

The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has also recently issued draft guidelines for experimental COVID-19 vaccines in India. The guidelines have listed various safety protocols including a 50 per cent efficacy in clinical trials.

Emerging hotspots identified in Delhi: The Delhi administration has identified 33 areas as emerging hotspots for COVID-19, as per a report in Hindustan Times. Some of these areas are Connaught Place or CP, Lajpat Nagar, Laxmi Nagar and Paschim Vihar.
