India cases and toll: With 61,267 new infections and 884 deaths in the last 24 hours, from 8 am Monday to 8 am Tuesday, India continued to post a gradual dip in daily cases and deaths. India’s coronavirus tally now stands at 66,85,082, as per the data shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. This includes 9,19,023 active cases, 56,62,490 recoveries and 1,03,569 deaths.    

According an analysis by The Times of India, from 17 September to 4 October, the daily average cases climbed only once, on 1 October—otherwise, there has been a steady downward trend in the last two weeks. Meanwhile, 10,89,403 COVID-19 tests were conducted across the country on Monday.

Kerala has maximum active cases per million: With a rapid surge in infections, Kerala is emerging as the new hotspot for coronavirus cases in the country. The state’s active cases per million population have climbed to 2,421; for Maharashtra, this is 2,297, followed by Karnataka at 1,845, according to a ToI report.

Kerala’s coronavirus case count has reached 2,34,928—84,958 active cases, 1,49,111 recoveries and 859 fatalities. The state recorded 5,042 fresh COVID-19 cases and 23 deaths in the last 24 hours.
