India's residential architecture is entering a period where climate can no longer be treated as a secondary design consideration. Rising temperatures, intense rainfall, water stress and more frequent extreme weather events are changing what homes need to provide. The house of the future cannot simply be designed around aesthetics, floor area and amenities—it has to be designed around heat, water, energy and resilience. That's not a trend. It's the new baseline.

This matters more as India urbanises at speed. The World Bank estimates that 70% of new jobs in India will come from cities by 2030, which means more pressure on urban infrastructure and housing, not less. As cities expand, how homes are designed will directly shape household comfort, energy consumption and resilience for decades to come.

Heat is the most immediate challenge. Homes designed primarily around air-conditioning will not hold up as temperatures rise, that approach doesn't scale, and it shouldn't be the default. Residential architecture needs to return to fundamentals: orientation, shading, ventilation, insulation and material selection. Minimising direct solar gain, designing for cross-ventilation, and using shaded balconies or courtyards can cut indoor heat before mechanical cooling is even needed.
