A couch should be firm and comfortable

Plonking yourself on a couch or sofa after a long day of work can be the most relaxing thing. Many decor enthusiasts will tell you that it is that one piece of furniture that can make or break the look of your room.

A couch spells comfort and you can place one not just in your living room, but also in your study room and even bedroom, if it is spacious enough. Here’s how you can choose a couch that’s just right for you:

If you are looking for a durable and comfortable couch, the first thing you should check is the frame. Your sofa can have a metal, plastic or a wooden frame. “Soft wood, such as pine, is low-cost, but it may warp or wobble after five years. Pricier hardwood (kiln-dried oak, ash, or beech, for example) is more durable,” says a Good Housekeeping article.

It is important that your couch looks and feels good. Choose a fabric that is comfortable and easy to maintain and, preferably, stain-resistant too. Whether you go for cotton, linen or silk, look for higher thread count—it is a mark of durability. Synthetic microfibre, which is stain-resistant, is another option.

Spring test

When you are sitting on a couch and it makes a creaking sound, know that the spring of your couch is not placed properly. Most couches come with serpentine springs that provide adequate support, but can sag over a period of time. Another, more expensive option is the ‘eight-way hand-tied’ spring, which is comfortable but the jury is still out on whether it is any better than serpentine spring.
